Jyotirlinga
The Jyotirlinga are the most sacred shrines of Lord Shiva. The word Jyotirlinga is derived from two words, Jyoti meaning “Light” and Linga symbolize Lord Shiva. It represent the divine pillars of eternal light that symbolize the nature and power of Lord Shiva. Devotees also believe that worshipping at these shrines brings spiritual enlightenment, inner peace and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
There are twelve Jyotirlinga that are spread across different part of India. Each of them has it own unique history, mythology, architecture beauty and religious significance.
Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva
Baidyanath
Baidyanath (Vaidyanath) located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Here, Lord Shiva worshipped as a Healer. Devotees come to seek blessing for good health.
Bhimashankar
Bhimashankar is the place where the Shiva defeated the demon Bhima. It is located in Sahyadri Hills of Maharashtra.
Grishneshwar
Temple situated near the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra. It represent the devotion, compassion, family harmony and fulfillment of prayers.
Kashi Vishwanath
Temple is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is considered the gateway to Moksha. It is believed that lord shiva grants eternal peace to those who worship here.
Kedarnath
Kedarnath Jyotirlinga is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Jyotirlinga is also a char dam of Uttarakhand along with Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
Mahakaleshwar
Temple is the only South Facing Jyotirlinga, located in Ujjain Madhya Pradesh. Here, Lord Shiva is worship as a Time.
Mallikarjuna
Mallikarjuna is situated on Srisailam Hill of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is associated with Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.
Nageshwar
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga situated in Dwarka, Gujarat. It symbolizes protection from negativity, fear, and poisonous influences.
Omkareshwar
Omkareshwar is situated on Mandhata Island in Madhya Pradesh. The island resembles the “Om” symbol and signifies divine energy and peace.
Ramanathaswamy
Located in Tamil Nadu, It is established by Lord Rama. It represent devotion, righteousness, forgiveness and unity of Shaivism and Vaishnavism.
Somnath
First Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, located in Gujarat. It symbolize eternal power and resilience because it was rebuilt several times after invasions.
Trimbakeshwar
Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is located in Nashik Maharashtra. It has three faces that symbolizing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
